The model number you have listed is an iPhone 4, which can be upgraded to iOS 7.1.2. To have the Software update option on the phone you need at least iOS 5, otherwise you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade.

Is your profile correct (iOS version)?

Devices running an iOS version older than 5.0 are updated from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of the article you asked this question from. An iPhone 3GS can only be updated directly to 6.1.6, which is the maximum iOS version for it.

It seems you've gotten me on the right track BUT now I'm getting an error message - It seems the update and perhaps the backup both have failed. I get an error 1 message, reviewing the log it appears the phone may have tried to installed an OS too advanced for this phone???
