Q: iTunes Restore remains grayed out

Using iTunes (for Windows) ver 12.4.1.6.  Backing up to computer. {iPhone IOS 9.3.2, iPad IOS 9.3.2}

     The "Restore Backup ..." remains grayed out. This is for both the iPhone and iPad. Having problems with the iPad. Did a 'Forced Restart' with iPad connected to iTunes to put it in Recovery Mode. Tried restoring. NOTHING there -- system, but NONE of my apps. "Restore Backup ..." grayed out. Latest Backup says "Your iPad has never been backed up to this computer." Untrue, I purposely did several backups last week as I got the iPad back and running.

     Trying to verify the problem with iPhone. "Restore Backup ..." grayed out. Latest Backup says "Your iPhone has never been backed up to this computer." Untrue. Click "Back up Now". Watch it go through its 5 steps. At the end "Restore Backup ..." becomes momentarily available and then goes back to being grayed out.

     What is going on ??? How can I get back my previous backups? Can I get them back? If the iPad backup file was corrupted, why did it take out the iPhone backups?

     Please help. Thanks in advance.

iPhone 5, iOS 9.3.2

    Make sure iTunes is up to date.

    Mac

    1. Open iTunes.
    2. From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose iTunes > Check for Updates.
    3. Follow the prompts to install the latest version.

    Windows

    1. Open iTunes.
    2. From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Help > Check for Updates. Learn what to do if you can’t see the menu bar.
    3. Follow the prompts to install the latest version.

    Downloaded and updated iTunes (for Windows) to version 12.4.2.4. Wanted to make a backup of iPhone before updating it to IOS 9.3.3. Clicked "Back up Now". As before, "Restore Backup ..." became momentarily available and then went back to being grayed out.
