How to tell if a sealed iPhone is unlocked

I have a factory sealed iPhone 5S. Is there a way to tell if it is unlocked? I believe it was ordered from T-Mobile but it has never been activated. If it is assigned to T-Mobile, is there a way to unlock the iPhone without opening the box? I want to preserve as much value as possible.
