Q: Deleting Photos on Mac Book, but Keep in iCloud

If I delete photos from my photo library and or iPhoto app will the photos be deleted from my iCloud? Im out of disk space on my computer and thats even with optimizing the photo files, I have 10,800 pictures and need the space. So just to clarify my goal is to delete the photos off my mac and keep them on iCloud. Thanks for you help guys.

"If I delete photos from my photo library and or iPhoto app will the photos be deleted from my iCloud?"

"When you delete a photo or video from your Photos app, it will also delete from your iCloud Photo Library and iCloud storage. You can recover your photos and videos from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days."

The entire point of Photos is having your media on your computer and in the cloud. If you are trying to save drive space on your computer Apple has your back. Open Photos and then open Preferences under the Photos menu. The first option must be check marked for your computer’s photos to be uploaded to iCloud. Underneath there are two options. The first stores photos in the cloud and on your computer in full size, the second uploads the full sized picture to the cloud and then keeps only a small thumbnail on your computer. This option keeps your library very small. If you want to use Photos to manage your pictures this is your best option.

With only 10,800 photos you must have some other disk hog on your Mac - with the Mac bin optimized that should not take a lot of space and if you really have optimized photos and or out of space then you need to add hard drive space to your Mac

There is no way to use iCloud Photo Library and have different libraries on iCloud and the Mac

You can stop using ICPL which will disconnect the Mac from iCloud and manually upload photos to iCLoud.com - that is a tedious and error prone process
