Q: apple tv won't recognize my computer

Hi all,

I have the latest version of Apple TV software. On my Mac Pro I run either OS 10.6.8 with iTunes 11.4 or OS 10.10.1 with iTunes 12.0.1. I have Home Sharing turned on in iTunes on both of those configs. But my Apple TV won't recognize my computer on the local WiFi network that I have set up. When I click on the 'Computers' icon in Apple TV it tells me to 'turn on Home Sharing'. Anyone have any suggestions?

Does ATV see the computer if you start ATV first, then start the iTunes program?

What model ATV is it?

Are you using the same Apple ID on both?

Are they both on the same WiFi?

Not a problem. You may have already tried some of the things there but with it not working on 2 versions of iTunes it may be more likely to be network related than a problem with the iTunes installation.

Hi Diana,

Thanks for the reply. Your question about 'starting ATV' gave me an idea. I went to Settings-->General and navigated down to 'restart'. I had no idea I could 'restart' Apple TV Lol. After restarting my Apple TV device it recognized my computer and iTunes Library. I hope this solution will help others that are having similar issues with Home Sharing. It ended up being a pretty easy fix.

Good. But it may not be perfect. Sometimes ATV loses sight of iTunes while sleeping. Waking ATV before starting iTunes means that iTunes announces its services on the net and ATV gets the message. You may or may not run into this along the way.
