Q: I have a question...

Own a 4th Gen iPod Shuffle, c. 2012. Have already created one playlist (let's call it Playlist A), and have been trying to create a second, separate playlist (Playlist B). Have iTunes on my Dell laptop, and have been using it to (1) burn audio CDs, and (2) create playlists for use on my iPod.

Problem: When I add new material to my iPod (Playlist B), the songs on that playlist are duplicated on the already existing Playlist A. When I try to delete those duplications from Playlist A, they are also deleted from Playlist B.

Is there a way to stop adding these new items to Playlist A? Failing that, is there a way to delete those duplications from Playlist A without deleting them from Playlist B? (Having all these duplications is a real space-waster.)

Thanks!

I'm not really sure I understand what you're doing, but in iTunes the same track can appear in multiple playlists without being duplicated in physical memory, either on your computer or on your device.

I've created two playlists using iTunes. The first (Playlist A) is the older one, and has been on my iPod Shuffle for a couple of years. I recently decided to create a second playlist (Playlist B) for my iPod, using songs burned from several audio CDs. After copying (burning) those CDs onto my laptop using iTunes, I attempted to create Playlist B by dragging and dropping those files from my iTunes music library to the iPod. That worked fine--a new Playlist B was created--BUT each song that I dragged to that new playlist also appeared on the older Playlist A

Since I don't want those newer songs on my older playlist, I tried deleting each one from Playlist A; but when I did that, each song I deleted was then also deleted from Playlist B. Not sure if it matters, but the files on Playlist A are MPEG audio files, while those I'm attempting to place on the newer Playlist B are AAC audio files.

Ideally, I'd like to prevent this duplication; but if that's not possible, I'd like to be able to delete those songs from Playlist A without having them also disappear from Playlist B. Thoughts?

    Thanks for your help!

Is this the same library that was originally used to add the media to the device?

Is it set up to sync automatically or are you adding media manually?

Adding media to one regular playlist won't add it to any others. Adding media to a playlist on a device will add it to that playlist, and also to the device's Music playlist. Ordinarily you cannot add the same file to a device more than once (though it can be added to multiple playlists) but if you have multiple copies of the track in different formats then those can be added creating duplicates on the device.

See the iPod shuffle  user guide for more information.

I think you may have answered my question.

Apparently there is an "All Songs" playlist on my iPod Shuffle that contains every song on that device. Is that correct? That is what I've been calling "Playlist A" in my earlier messages.

There is also the new playlist I created on my iPod from the burned audio CDs (Playlist B). As I add songs to this playlist, they're simultaneously being added to the "All Songs" playlist. Seems like an unnecessary duplication, but hey, if that's what the iPod is designed to do, so be it.

Is my take on this correct?

    Thanks!

Yes, that makes sense. Anything you add via a playlist will also be displayed in the All Songs list. No duplication of tracks occurs.
