Q: How to secure the home network: Components and configuration

We recently changed our home network and I'm concerned about security. In the past I relied on my ISP-supplied modem's software to carry the security load. (Maybe not a good solution, but I went with it.) Now I have an owned modem and am concerned I left the door open.

I should mention that I'm concerned about access to the LAN via internet connection, not via local wifi. I feel good about my local wifi security.

My network is set up like this:

WWW --> Arris SB6183 Modem --> Apple Airport Extreme II --> Mac Mini Server (El Cap) --> Network switches --> [devices]

• I don't believe the Modem has a built-in firewall, but I may be mistaken.

• The Server is controlling the Users and Networks with access.

• I believe the Server also takes control of the Airport ports.

Are there any additional components (i.e., software firewall) that are recommended?

Also, would there be an 'ideal' combination of Server Access settings?

Thanks so much for the advice.
