Q: Apple Store Helped Thief to Erase My Macbook Pro While It was Beeping!!

Guys, this is my terrible experience, please let me know if I can do anything to get my laptop back. My macbook pro was stolen in the library. I use Find My iphone app and played the sound immediately, at the same time, I located the thief with my laptop in the apple store 5 miles away. When I got there, I was told by the store manager that someone brought my beeping mac pro asking technician to erase data, and the technician just did it without asking any questions about proof of ownership. WHILE THE LAPTOP WAS BEEPING SHOWING MY NAME AND PASSWORD!! It is very obviously to see this mac is stolen, however, the technician and manager just erased the data and let the thief go! The only thing they suggested is to report to police. I can't imagine such thing happened in the store! Very weird thing! Looks like this store is pretty convenient to the thieves!

Anyone can suggest if anything I can do? Very weird thing. I talked to the representative online and he said "hey definitely would not have erased a Mac in the store that was beeping".

Thank you very much guys.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Depending on the country or region you are located, your options may vary.

To contact Apple direct and ask them what they suggest (if not in the USA you may have to try to contact main Corporate offices) to see if they have an idea on what could be done.

    • Contact - How to Contact Us - Apple:

    https://www.apple.com/contact/

You'd need some documentation, statements of record by witnesses or persons who were  involved in the situation, and file a police report. This last part may be an issue, in that people you contact may not reveal much if they figure you will

go and file there names in a report with the local police.

If you think that an Apple retail outlet, an authorized reseller, or an Official Apple Store may have done something that was completely wrong, you could see if Apple Legal would offer a reply: https://www.apple.com/legal/contact/

Another angle would be to file an Apple Feedback (product & or support) where the issue may be recorded with Apple, but you will likely never hear from them.

    • Support Feedback • Product Feedback

Since these ASC discussion communities are considered a user-to-user 'peer' help forum you probably won't get a direct reaction telling of your plight, by way of a reply from Apple.

Report a lost or stolen Apple product - Apple Support

Sorry about your loss; and if you have other insurance, based on renter or home owner status that covers theft, contact them and ask how to file a claim. They may be interested in whoever helped enable someone else to access your MacBook.

If your Mac is lost or stolen - Apple Support

To disassociate your personal effects, accounts, forms of payment, AppleID, from the lost MacBook is one of the first things to consider; so the theft does not enable the taker further losses to you.

Not sure what else to say. Good luck in any event...

Thanks man, very helpful. I talked to many friends they said this employee probably have cooperation with the thief. I am in bay area, oakridge apple store. The store is very crowded, but the thief was arranged immediately and erased the data immediately. No validation at all. Very weird thing. I have filed police report and included employee names. Looks like there is no option in Apple Legal page. However I believe the apple store should realize this is very serious thing.
