Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand from your post that you want to create more space on your iPhone 4 but are concerned you will lose some of your apps. I understand your concern as there are many apps that are no longer available on older iOS versions. I would recommend if you are updated to the latest iOS version for your iPhone 4 that you manually create more space. You can do this by:
1. Deleting apps that are no longer being used by pressing and holding your finger on the app and then tapping the X that appears in the upper left corner.
2. Deleting old/unnecessary messages from the Messages app.
3. Importing your photos to your computer and deleting them from your iPhone. This article has the steps you can use:
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
4. Remove any music you do not listen to from the iPhone. Here are the steps you will need along with additional steps for other items that can be removed:
Delete music, movies, apps, and other content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
