Q: iMac2015 running 10.11 will not shut down

My iMac2015 was working fine with OS 10.11, but somewhere around the .3 or .4 updates it will not let me shut it down properly. Nothing is running. Selecting shut down closes the menu bar and dock, but nothing else happens for many, many minutes. End up resorting to the power button. I have done the typical user maintenance with no change. Cannot log out, either, that selection goes to another blank screen but never shuts down. I have installed 10.11.5 and nothing has changed. Suggestions?

- If you only ran First Aid when booted into OSX, boot to Recovery

About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

and do First Aid. You can't do a full First Aid on the booted drive

- Try starting in Safe Mode

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode and see if you can shutdown from Safe mode. In Safe Mode not all things are loaded.

- If it the disk is repairable reinstall the OSX

Nothing should be lost but backup data first

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

Alternately you can, as a test, do a fresh install OF OSX on an another disk and see if problem persists.

Have you tried a fresh install of 10.11.5?

You said "I have done the typical user maintenance".
Just what all did you do?

Thanks for the swift reply. I have unplugged/reset the smc, reset the pram, run disk utility first aid, but have not reinstalled the OS. I was hoping to avoid that pain, but nothing else has fixed whatever versions .3 or .4 installed.

Some task is running and wants to finish first before giving the shutdown a chance.
Open ActivityMonitor, look at the running tasks.

Thanks. I should have known to boot alternatively and will do so when next near the Mac. I did successfully boot off of a backup drive running 10.11.3 but the same thing occurred.

Thanks, too. I agree and that is what it has seemed like and I have had ActivityMonitor open looking for a hanging 'chad', but could not deduce anything causing the problem. Although I was looking for some big task and it could have been something small. Will check that again when next I boot it.

does not have to be a "big" task, nor does it have to "hang" visibly, it just does not get satisfaction...

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had a little time with that iMac (not enough to do the reinstall tip) and I am still hoping to not do that. I need to backup before I do that. I did run disk utility in safe mode, but no change there.

But the system does (and did again) behave like something is hanging when I select shut down. I need a tip on how to see that in Activity Monitor or some other way to know what is hanging. If it is open and running when I go to shut down it closes that window and the dock and task bar and I can neither see or do anything, other than force a shut down.

Guess the updater issue has segued to 11.11.6. I presume there will be a combo updater with that number.
