Q: iMac2015 running 10.11 will not shut down

My iMac2015 was working fine with OS 10.11, but somewhere around the .3 or .4 updates it will not let me shut it down properly.  Nothing is running.  Selecting shut down closes the menu bar and dock, but nothing else happens for many, many minutes.  End up resorting to the power button.  I have done the typical user maintenance with no change.  Cannot log out, either, that selection goes to another blank screen but never shuts down.  I have installed 10.11.5 and nothing has changed.  Suggestions?

I have reinstalled 10.11.6 via Recovery and I am still unable to properly shut down the iMac.

Someone suggested something must be running in the background keeping it from shutting down/rebooting/re-launching, etc. (it won't do any of those things).  But I cannot figure out how to determine what is hanging.  Looking at the Activity Monitor shows me how much is running, but I can't keep it running when I try to shut down.

Is there a log somewhere that would tell me what stopped the shutdown, which I can only do via holding the power button?

You said you "I have reinstalled 10.11.6 via Recovery".

Did you do a fresh install?

You open the Console app and look for suspicious log entries after you click on shutdown. Post suspicious ones here

Yes, it was a fresh install.  I will look in Console next time I am in front of it.  Thanks.

What did you restore/install after the fresh install?

Sadly, running the combo update to 10.11.6 did not solve the problem.  Same as before.

FWIW, there are a number of third-party apps that will prevent a normal restart or shutdown. Wacom, and Avid being just two of them. If you could post the results of an EtreCheck report maybe one will stand out.
