Q: Choosing Single Chapter Or Multiple Chapters - Disc Space?

Hi Gang

I'm using iLife 08 - iDVD 08 and loaded some older templates as well. I have a 95 minute piece, (single sided burn), which looks nice using the 'Professional Setting.' Currently its one long chapter about 95 minutes long.

I know I can break up the longer piece into several sub chapters and put them in the menu, (that's no problem). What concern's me is whether I'll have enough disk space, (keeping it a single sided burn), to include 'Play Entire Movie,' in addition to including the sub chapters? If its mathematically adding the length of the total piece to the smaller pieces, no I don't think will work? It seems, the total length will now become prohibitive for a single sided burn. And BTW, all the film clips are exported 'referenced files' and not 'self-contained'.

In keeping the burn to 'one' side, (95 minutes long), I think my options are:

Stay with one long piece, or use 'DVD Studio Pro'  which would require some long tutorial time ...

Any other ideas?

Thank you!

Where's the 95 minute clip from?

You can add chapter markers at a given interval with iDVD, i.e. at 5 minute or 10 minute intervals to your current project without having to exceed the 95 minute playing time that you currently have.

1 - select the movie in the main menu

    iDVD002.jpg

2 - select the Advanced ➙ Create Chapter Markers for Movie menu option.

    iDVD001.jpg

3 - select the time interval for the chapters.

    iDVD003.jpg

4 - double click on the movie button in the main menu to get this sub menu:

    iDVD004.jpg

5 - double click on the Scene Selection button to get the chapters:

The downside to this is you can only pick a time interval and not a specific point in the movie for the marker.

Otherwise import the movie into iMovie or whatever movie editing app you use and add the markers where you want there.

Hello Old Toad - Always nice to see you

Thanx for this relatively easy option of creating 'subchapters'. Seems straight forward enough. But yes it has drawbacks in that you cannot create a precise duration for a particular piece/story. What I had in mind was extracting about eight separate standalone pieces, (Referenced Files). And then simply drag each of them in the an iDVD Menu. Obviously, the drawback here concerns the 'Entire Movie' piece treated as another separate standalone piece. You would agree, trying to use this method adding separate standalone pieces, (Scene Selections), ontop of (Entire Movie), would prohibit a single sided burn 'doubling' the total content? Yes?

There seems to be one last option, 'still using iDVD. As I see it, I can always simply eliminate 'Play Entire Movie' and only provide each chapter separately inserting them chronologically. Sound like a 'Viable Option'?

    Thank You Mr. Toad

What you proposed originally would force you to use a double layer DVD disk as the playing time would be doubled moving it up to 190 minutes or 3 hrs, 10 minutes.  Unless you have an video editor that can add the chapter markers to a copy of the original 95 minute video and create a new project with that.

    I posed a different option:

"Still using iDVD. I can simply eliminate 'Play Entire Movie Chapter' and only add the 'Sub Chapters' inserting them chronologically". In 'Real Time', there shouldn't be any media extending beyond the original 95 minutes. Do you follow?  Do you agree? Sound like a 'Viable Option'?

That will work.  As Hannibal of the "A-Team" says:  I love it when a plan comes together.
