Q: Photos and imovie 10.2.1 duplicate libraries

I´ve always kept all my media in a external Lacie drive. Ever since I upgraded to El Capitan, I have been trying to make things work, media wise.

First, after migrating to new Photos, I ended up with 2 photo libraries (one says photo library and another says iphoto library) when I was ready to delete the older iphoto for extra space, I read that it does not matter since they were mirroring the same space in the hard drive and I should NOT delete the older library. So I kept both libraries in my external drive.

So Now that I upgraded to the new imovie 10.1.2, I noticed that it says iPhoto library NOT a Photo library and then I discovered that iMovie upgrade had created a New Photos Library in my Mac Hard Drive (with just data and no pictures, as if starting new)

Should I delete this new Photo library in my Mac Hard drive or does imovie 10.1.2 need it? I also want to delete the new imovie folder that it got created because I want all raw movies to import to the external hard drive and not the Mac Drive.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

The Photos Library will not need much extra storage initially, that is right (see: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support), but once you start working with Photos and import new photos, or edit photos and delete photos, the libraries will be drifting apart. In the long run it will be better to delete the iPhoto Library, if you no longer use iPhoto as well. Otherwise deleting photos from the Photos Library will free no storage at all as long as the iPhoto library is present.  Keep a backup copy of the iPhoto library on some backup drive, however.

iMovie did not find your Photos Library on the external drive.  Is your Photos Library enabled as your System Photo Library?  Check the Photos > Preferences > General:  "Use as System Photo Library" needs to be dimmed to indicate that this library is your System Photo Library. After enabling it, restart both iMovie and Photos.

If Photos does not allow you to use your Photos Library as System Photo Library, check the file system of your External drive. Is it MacOS Extended (Journaled) as it should be? And is the drive locally mounted?
