Macbook 2016 HDMI output flickering

I have both MacBook 2015 and MacBook 2016,

and I've purchased the original Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

I've loaded both MacBooks with genuine copies of Windows 10 Pro with bootcamp, partition cut into half between Mac OS and Windows 10.

The new MacBook 2016, while doing screen cloning using the Multiport Adapter under Windows 10,

the output always flickers, and the pattern is always consistent:

1.) Waking up from sleep, always flickers once;

2.) And then will at least flickers 2-3 times more;

It doesn't happen with the MacBook 2015,

is this is hardware design flaw of the new MacBook 2016?? Or is it a software (driver) issue?

All drivers are being updated to the latest.

MacBook, Windows 10

Hitting the websites dedicated to apple news is the way to go!

Maybe this way apple takes care of this matter and pays serious attention to its customers.

We should even sue apple for the amount of accessories that we bought - I did and so did others from what we can read at this forum - in order to debug this situation...

I have 3 HDMI adaptors and only need one...

I have 3 USB-C and charging cables and only need one...

And I even bought a OWC docking station... OWC customer care must have tons of complaints regarding their OWC docking station (I did one), specifically made for the macbook, that with the flickering problem keeps giving their problem bad reputation, when apple is to blame...

Enough is enough... let's keep the pressure on apple because this autism from such a huge company is just not acceptable...

Apple 2nd tier support had me go into various startup folders in the OS x libraries and remove everything. This does seem to have decreased the issue, but it still happens sometimes, particularly when I've been using the mac for a while since the last reboot. This makes me suspect that it has something to do with load and/or the need to cleanup some type of processing capacity. It also tells me someone at Apple has some idea what's going on.

I've also started experiencing random system power offs or reboots once in a while. Anyone else have that?

Mine is a custom ordered (maxed out) 2016 Macbook.

Hi,

same problem here. I tried other adapters. Some are better than other:

- Apple USB-C multiport: flickering issue after sleep.

- UGreen ( https://www.amazon.fr/Adaptateur-Ugreen-Convertisseur-vers-Blanc/dp/B0173A8LSC/r ef=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=147210… ): screen issue, but different from Apple: screen doesn't come back, it stay black but is seen by macOS.

- JuicedSystem ( http://www.juicedsystems.com/USB-C-Macbook-12-Multifunctional-Display-Adapter_p_ 38.html ): Screen was working but I didn't test too long because it as only usb-2 (I need usb-3).

- Kadi-port ( https://kadicreative.com/products/the-kadi-port ): it is working without flickering or black issues (I keep finger crossed :-) ) But it seems fragile (I prefer a short cable between macbook and hub).

Best,

jym

I tried many different adapters, including Apple's own digital multiport adapter of course.

They all flicker, unfortunately.

Direct plugging to LG 27UD88-W is the best of all, having the least flickers. However it's using direct DP signal (4-lanes) so it's irrelevant to the case because all adapters involve changing DP signal to HDMI signal (2-lanes).

I had a call from Apple support this weekend.
The lady I spoke with mentioned that they have seen my posts here and that wanted to make some debugging on my macbook.

So, after all, they look at this forum, which is very good news regarding Apple support to its clients, and I was happily surprised!!!

I agreed a conference call next Wednesday with access to my machine and i'll give more news later on.

I truly recommend that the people with 2016 MacBooks that have flickering problems with external monitors (no matter what adapter or monitor) state precisely their condition here, so that Apple can try to troubleshoot our problem.

Kind regards to all.

My 2016 Retina MacBook loses sync with external monitors, causing the external display to go blank, then the picture returns. This occurs with external USB-C hubs and the Apple Multiport AV Adapter. It occurs with DisplayPort and HDMI connections. It's the same issue others here have been experiencing, and I'm glad the issue has become public. I have an existing case open with AppleCare regarding the issue, but they haven't followed up with doing any troubleshooting or research. I've experienced this issue since I purchased my MacBook.

I have exactly the same problems you described with my Macbook 2016 m7. This occurs with the LG 27UD88-W monitor via USB-C cable (the LG original one and with the shorter one 3.1 from AUKEY too) or with other monitors or projectors via MINIX NEO C multiport adapter over VGA. I bought this Macbook mainly for university teaching and for professional presentations but unfortunately I am not able to do this as long as this problems exist... It is very annoying and disappointing and I really hope Apple will soon find a solution for this, otherwise I have to change the Macbook and go for another computer.

I too have this problem with a 2016 Macbook 12-inch. I have a Mokin USB-C to USB-C/HDMI/USB-A adapter, and the Macbook is connected to an Acer G257HU 2560 x 1440 display. I have upgraded to Sierra and am enrolled in the Beta program, currently running 10.12.1 Beta 5. After a cold boot, there are no issues, but after sleeping and waking, I get the same either "quick screen blank" for a few seconds, or the "screen swipe" effect that others have described. It does seem to take longer to get the problematic state using 10.12.1 Beta 5 than it did when I was running El Capitan, but I didn't actually measure anything to confirm that. Rebooting does make the problem go away temporarily. Last year I was using a 2015 Macbook 12-inch with the same adapter and monitor and never experienced this issue.

Hi Everyone,

I suggest updating to Mac OS Sierra 10.12.1 and trying it. I've been using the reboot trick every time I plug in my Acer H277HU monitor (it has a usb-c plug using Display Port) and it always did the blanking issue. Here's a video from the apple insider forum thread on the issue.

I've installed 10.12.1 and it has not come up again since. In fact, I just unplugged my computer from the monitor and plugged it in again, without the issue returning.

Give it a shot! I'm hoping the most recent update brings resolution for all of us.

Cheers
