It means that the Mac isn't recognizing the battery for some reason. Hold down the Option key, and then click on the battery icon to see what it says the "Condition" is.

You may get some more insight by holding the option key and clicking the >System Information>Hardware>Power take a look at some stats, cycle count etc. You should of got some warning your battery was failing if that is the case.
You can Try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 to see if anything changes.
