Q: OSX System Integrity Protection prevents Lync 2011 from starting

If not, it may well be that the app is being prevented from starting by Gatekeeper, not by SIP.
Control-click the application icon, choose Open. In the ensuing dialog, choose Open.
If it works, then you won't need to this again in the future, and can henceforth open normally.

There is no mention of any incompatibility that I can see.
I did see a suggestion to delete the preference file.
It certainly can't hurt to try it.
In the Finder, hold down the option key, choose Go->Library, open the Preferences folder and delete com.microsoft.lync.plist

Jul 20, 2016 11:16 AMby mogf01,I have done a "complete removal" of Lync, as recommended by the Microsoft article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2691870. This includes removing the preference file as you mentioned. Unfortunately that didn't help.

Jul 20, 2016 11:56 AMby mogf01,I just installed the "OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Update" and it fixed the problem. This indicates that (1) I could most probably have fixed it also in 10.11.5 if I had just known how to configure SIP correctly, and (2) the problem was with configuration of OSX and not with Lync.
