I have the MBP mid-2012 13-inch non-retina.

True the retina build has a better display. I don't notice it as I am not directly working with both and comparing.

What I like about the non-retina build is that it is upgradable.

For $200 I put a 500gb. SSD and 16gb. of ram in it. And I have the option of swapping out the DVD player for an SSD in the future. I high recommend you do the hardware upgrade for best performance.

It performs great now. I could not be happier with this MBP.

For Video rendering and music creation the non-retina 2012 is just fine.

My only con about this MBP is that the Webcams SUCK !....

Easy solution is to replace the webcam with a logitech c920 USB webcam.

Other than that they are pretty good MBP's
