Q: Can't Set Up Hey Siri on iPhone 6s

Hi, I can't set up Hey Siri on my iPhone 6s running iOS 9.3.2. I've shut off Siri, turned it on, hard reset my iPhone, taken my case off, and made sure my microphone is clear. What happens is I click set up, say "Hey Siri!" For the first prompt, and it makes the little bar go up and down showing it heard me, but will not move on to the next prompt. My microphone works finebecause when I use actual Siri she hears me clearly and responds. I recently had to go into recovery mode on my phone because of an issue. I really need help. Resetting my phone to factory defaults is an absolute last resort because a lot of my stuff is stored on my iPhone! Thank you.

    Hi, millieisperfect!

Thanks for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities about the "Hey Siri" feature. Based on what you've shared, I understand that when you try to set it up, you see the lines moving as if it's listening but it never moves to the next set up prompt. I also am seeing that you've checked to make sure Siri and your microphone are otherwise working by using the Home button to activate Siri, and it works without an issue. I use Siri every day, myself, and know how convenient "Hey Siri" is; I want you to be able to use it, and am happy to help!

The first time you set up "Hey Siri", you'll be asked to repeat "Hey Siri" three times so that she can get used to your voice and speech patterns. Make sure you are not confusing the second and third requests to say "Hey Siri" as it not moving forward in the prompts. Once you've confirmed that, try the following steps if you continue to have trouble:

    1. Turn off "Hey Siri", then restart your iPhone. Then, try to set "Hey Siri" up again. If you're not sure how to restart your iPhone, use the steps in the article below.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    2. If you are still unable to set up "Hey Siri" after restarting, update your iOS software to the newest release, 9.3.3. You can update over Wi-Fi directly on your iPhone or by connecting your phone to iTunes on a computer. Instructions for both update options can be found in the following article.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    3. Reset all settings on your iPhone if you still are unable to get "Hey Siri" set up after updating. You can do this under Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Doing this will not remove any of your data from the phone, but it will revert customizable settings (like your wallpaper and display brightness, ringtones and alerts, Date & Time settings, etc) back to their factory defaults. It will also remove any saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, as well as any VPN or APN settings you've used. Once you've done this, try setting up "Hey Siri" again.

    4. If you are still not able to set up "Hey Siri", please use iCloud or iTunes to backup your iPhone, then restore your iPhone to factory defaults using iTunes.

You can find help with backing up your iPhone here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Steps on restoring your iPhone to factory defaults can be found here: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

    5. After you restore your device to factory settings, please set it up as a new device (meaning without your backed up data, at least temporarily) and attempt to set up "Hey Siri". If it works, you can restore your backup using the instructions in the article linked below.

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
