Q: Problems changing desktop icons

I have a mid-2013 MacBook Air & I'm running OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.1.  I wanted to download some new icons for my desktop & the latest instructions told me to find the folder I wanted to change in Finder, after downloading (at first I tried ics icons, then icns icons) the icons I wanted to use. Then it explained to click on the folder you wanted to change & click on "Get info".  Then I was to copy the new icon & then go back to the folder in finder & in the top left corner was a small blue folder, click it until it outlined in blue & then hit paste. Didn't work. Now instead of a blue folder, I have a white icon w/the "Preview Icon" on it & the letters ICO.  If I use an ics icon I get the same thing, but it has JPEG on it. Please HELP! Thank you.
