Q: iMac has become unstable, Finder crashing

Hi,

 

Been having some problems with my iMac lately. It has become sluggish with the spinning beach ball appearing often no matter what application I'm using. Finder has also crashed a few times. Sometimes all the icons disappear from the desktop and it freezes. A few times the desktop has gone completely black. I always have to force a hard reboot and restart my iMac.

 

I did the Apple Hardware Test and it detected nothing wrong. I ran the EtreCheck software and it reported some problems with the hard disk. I've included the entire report below. When I look at my system logs, I have also seen a few entries like this:

Is the hard disk failing, is that why the crashing and sluggishness is happening? Oddly, this all started after Apple Support connected to my iMac two days ago to help me with a different problem with my iTunes account. I had to download a program and launch it so they could see my screen. I'm pretty sure it's a coincidence, but still a bit strange that these problems started happening shortly after that.

 

What should I do? Do I need to have the hard drive replaced?

    Go to Utilities menu and use disk doctor to check your drives/partition and see if the failures are repairable.

     

    You may want to do a back of of all your data (if you don't have one)

    The report clearly indicates your HD is failing. Before you do anything BACKUP AND VERIFY IT WORKS!!!!!

     

    Then make arrangements at your local AASP to have it replaced.

     

    AHT is not the best test however it's all you have. If you want, after backing up run AHT in Extended Mode 2-3 times back to back. Because AHT is not reliable you need to run it in extended mode 2-3 times back to back in order to give it a reasonable chance that it can find errors.

    Do you mean Disk Utility? When I run that, it says the hard disk appears OK.

    Okay, I was afraid of that. And outside of the warranty period as well, oh joy!

     

    I have an appointment at my local Apple Store tonight and will take it in for repair.

    I do have backups: a local backup using Time Machine, and an off-site backup with CrashPlan. How do I verify my Time Machine backup? I opened the disk and it appears all my files are there and I can access them, so, I presume the data is fine on that disk.

    Open TM and restore a file from 2 weeks ago, if it works then TM is working just fine. If you don't know how to do this, there are a number of videos on YouTube that show you how, for example:

    Yes - the etrecheck is getting the error messages from somewhere it should be from the disk utility.

     

    Even if you don't have partitions - you actually have to check the indented partition - and it may come up with an error message without having to run anything.

     

    Discovered that on my G4Cube -- the message that the disk was failing only showed up in the single indented partition - not in the drive itself.
