Once in a while, my upgraded Mac OS X v10.10.x/Yosemite get stuck after its required reboot.

Hello.

I noticed my work's 15" MacBook Pro (Retina; early 2013 model) would get
stuck after doing the required reboots from major upgrades like today's
once in a while. It has happened in the past too, but not always.

It seems to get stuck during its Setup Assistant screen (why?) according
to Command+tab hot keys: I could not access it either. Today's updates
got stuck with App Store. I could quit it, but got a mostly blank
desktop as shown in http://imgur.com/a/AR4Cz (apparently screen capturing
hot keys still work). I tried moving and clicking on everything with the
MBP's trackpad. Same with hot keys. Even forced a quit, log out, sleep,
and wake up. Nothing helped. I had to do a force reboot. 😟

Thank you in advance. 🙂

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Early 2013, 251 GB SSD, 15", etc.

It could be a connection issue where the app is trying to connect online.

Try downloading and running the combo updater. This often helps odd issues.

Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.

Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install.

"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.10.4 to 10.10.5. If somehow the 10.10.4 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.10.4 and 10.10.5 it will still be stale after the delta update.

Have you run the combo updater? Did it help? If no then try repairing your drive from Recovery.

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.

Run Repair Drive using Disk Utility in Recovery.

If your drive is OK, then do this next step in Recovery.

In the menu bar, select Utilities -> Terminal. Type resetpassword in the Terminal and press Enter.

1 Select your main hard drive.

2 In the dropdown box under "Select the user account" make sure to select your username.

3 Select the option: "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs", click the Reset button. It's not obvious when it's complete.

4 Quit the Reset Password application.

5 Quit the Terminal.

To Restart: Click Mac OS X Installer in the top left and click Quit Mac OS X Installer. Click the Startup Disk button. Click on your main hard drive and click the Restart button.

No since it is updated already. I will try them if it gets worse, but then I have had this problem ever since I got this MBP from work in August 2015.

Because you have "Terminal" as your avatar, I have a question. 🙂

I use OS 10.10.5, and the Terminal app' is Version 2.5.3 (343.7), anyway, it will open bur it won't allow me to enter a "Password"

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, and to anyone else out there.......

Is this the correct web page with its download link: Download OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Combo Update ? Its post date was from almost a year ago. :/

Verify under the Apple in the Menu bar > “About this Mac” that you are running Yosemite 10.10.x

If yes, try restarting in Safe boot mode then try the updater. While your disk space is a little low, you do have room to run the installer.

Safe boot

* shutdown

* start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound

* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key

* keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears

* now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)

* eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT in the top right of the window

* continue to login to see if the problem goes away.

Wow, safe mode takes forever!! 😟 Anyways, same results when I tried the combo updater. I found out that Apple doesn't allow users to reinstall the updates after installing them from App Store's updaters. See my https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.sys.mac.system/-iI2ENHBxx4/SUUB3h5TAgAJ newsgroup thread. 😟

This must be new behavior. I've never seen this before. You can run the full installer. This should not damage your data, but it's always advised that you backup first. It does not remove the apps you have installed.

Eh, it's OK. It is a minor issue. Just shut down and boot up if it happens again. I have done like five/5 times already since last summer. 😉
