sign out of your apple id in iTunes and then sign in with her so she can sync and backup.

You can backup multiple devices to the same computer, no problem.

However, an iPhone can only be assigned to one iTunes library, so if your wife's iPhone is already linked to another computer you may be prompted to erase it when connecting it to your computer.  Does she already sync it to another computer?

Thanks for the reply's, so we will need to create a different password and id for her phone back up?

I would also like to do that too, back hers up to icloud, is that the same doing the work double? Should we do just one or the other?

    thanks

Yes you two should be using different apple ids, but you can share apple id for music and apps.

To clarify, you can back up multiple iOS devices that share an Apple ID without having to log out and log in again. The backups are kept separate. Just be sure the devices have different names, so you can tell the backups apart.

True about the library, but not about backups. And even as far as the library is concerned, you can choose to sync different songs to each device.

No, you do NOT need to have different Apple IDs and passwords just to manage backups. It's a good idea, as Apple IDs are personal, and not intended to be shared between users (even in the same family), but it is not a requirement for backups.

Thanks Lawrence, what is not correct about the backups?  Are you saying that you can back up an iPhone to a different computer without being warned about it being erased?  I suppose that may be possible since you can initiate a backup without syncing, but most users wouldn't know that.

I was actually referring to a different point, that multiple devices CAN back up to the same computer using the same computer login account and same Apple ID. And you are also correct, that you can back up an iOS device to a different computer than the one you normally sync to, as long as you turn off the automatic sync feature and don't manually sync. But I agree that is an "advanced technique".
