Q: 10.11.6 update has crippled my Mac Pro

Having trouble after update to 10.11.6 - System preferences panes won't open, can't seem to find any app that will open - reports of apps damaged, including disk utility, console, etc. Restart and shut down/restart don't clear it. Came looking for reports - problem seems not universal. Had successful update on my MacBook Pro, but my Mac Pro now seems in dire straits. Went the Recovery route and re-inatalled OS X . 10.11.6 was installed. Still no joy. Application folder shows only a bare few, and not the Apple applications. Cannot open any System Preferences panes. Safe Boot does not complete. Hardware OK - can boot successfully to a clone (CCC) of only a few days ago. Could do a restore (from Time Machine BU), but that is a last resort. Looking for others facing similar challenges and their success at resolving the issues.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 3.2 GHz Quad Xeon 16GB RAM, 12TB HD

Have you performed a clean installation (e.g., via USB drive), Brian? Instead of updating.

    I think it would help.

A 'clean' installation is simply an installation onto a bare drive, whether it originates from a USB is irrelevant,

    same problem. Mac Pro 5,1

Continuous "LSD Quit Unexpectedly" errors. Computer crawls and barely works, not enough to run anything efficiently, test. Created a new startup from a backup. Safe-mode didn't help, but using another account on the same computer works.

Can temporary, files that Launch Services would use be deleted if you can't load the effected account?

A startup disk created from a backup is NOT a new one, it is a copy of an old one. So it has all the same problems.

Yes it is the 10.11.5 OS prior to the bad update.

and that is the question... how to I repair this so that I can update to 10.11.6, or as may be indicated by this long thread 10.11.6 may have some inherent problem with some computers. And, therefore wait for 10.11.7.

Since the problem drive will startup under 10.11.6 in a different user account, then it seems that I should be able to clean out some of the temporary files and/or dB's.  What is the best way to do this before attempting to update the 10.11.5 backup drive that has yet to be updated. If the Combo updater updates actual files and not the temporary files I would assume this may not help.

Post a report from Etrecheck so we may see what items are on your Mac, it is best not to guess.

I ran EtreCheck and there were no likely suspects. And the LSD error seemed to be pointing to something so I:

    1. Created another clone of the backup of the drive that failed when updating from 10.11.5>10.11.6. (this clone is still at 10.11.5)

    2. Ran Onyx using the default Automated process see attached screen for list of operations.

    3. Disabled couple menu bar apps... Adobe CC, Alfred and Monosnap.

    4. Downloaded and installed the Combo updater.

Updated to 10.11.6 and works fine.

Good, it would have been know what the cause was but you can't argue with success, next time maybe

"Good, it would have been know what the cause was"

I agree, but work got in the way.  I needed to go nuclear on this fix and get it done.

Although I am curious about the number of 5,1 users with this problem. It could hint towards legacy issues, or to something as invasive as the new Adobe CC software.... hopefully Apple will get some crash reports that will give them a hint.

    thanks for your help.

Right I sorted the problem out on my iMac. Basically the first time i upgraded I had the problem reported. I attempted the LSD fix, no dice So I used TimeMachine to re-install (3hrs!) and worked on the basis the login items were screwing things up. I simply went in the to user and groups settings in System Prefs, and for my user removed all login items. I then downloaded the combo install and ran that, now running on 10.11.6 with no issues

Why is nobody trying the solutions spacebuoy and I posted? They are working!

Make a backup of your installation, then delete the problem user account and install it again with the Migration assistant. Or delete the LaunchService files as described on the hyperlinked Apple discussion site.

What were those items (out of interest).

that is another good way of solving the problem. Removing login items before upgrading. Especially if you have a lot of login items.

So clearly we know now that most of the people if not all on this thread suffer from a stuck LSD during startup. While the symptoms make one worry that it is a very bad situation it is in fact only annoying. Nothing is lost! The worst situation is if you have no second user account and no means to boot from an external drive.

I wonder whether a particular app is causing this problem or an app unrelated LaunchService file screwup? After my user folder reinstallation from the backup via Migration Manager the final installation window told me that iStat menu sever is not compatible with this OS X version. But that doesn't necessarily means that iStat was the cause.

BTW, instead of going the terminal way to delete or rename the LaunchService files (com.apple.LaunchServices-XXXXXX.csstore) one can use the freeware EasyFind.
