Q: 10.11.6 update has crippled my Mac Pro

Having trouble after update to 10.11.6 - System preferences panes won't open, can't seem to find any app that will open - reports of apps damaged, including disk utility, console, etc. Restart and shut down/restart don't clear it. Came looking for reports - problem seems not universal. Had successful update on my MacBook Pro, but my Mac Pro now seems in dire straits. Went the Recovery route and re-inatalled OS X . 10.11.6 was installed. Still no joy. Application folder shows only a bare few, and not the Apple applications. Cannot open any System Preferences panes. Safe Boot does not complete. Hardware OK - can boot successfully to a clone (CCC) of only a few days ago. Could do a restore (from Time Machine BU), but that is a last resort. Looking for others facing similar challenges and their success at resolving the issues.

    They did tell me that I should disable both my virus protection software and the Little Snitch firewall program before installing any Apple update.

    As I read threads like this one about problems with Apple updates, I wish that everyone having such update problems would also state what unnecessary third party security software, cleaners, and monitoring utilities they are running on their Macs.  I would guess that the vast majority of Mac OS update problems posted on forums over the years are self induced by running unnecessary anti-virus, security, and monitoring software on Macs.  Running such software on a Mac has no benefit whatsoever, yet has many possible negative effects including performance problems, update problems, instability, and even introducing vulnerabilities that would not normally be there.

     

    Anyone having a problem updating to 10.11.6 should first either restore from backup or boot from a clone, then completely uninstall such software, download and install the combo updater for 10.11.6 and install it.  It's just a guess, but many of your Macs will then not only update successfully but will also have better performance than ever because the 3rd-party junk will not be running in the background looking for non-existent Mac threats.

    Similar problem with dire consequences.  My iMac would not restart.  Halfway through the process the screen went black.  I called tech assistance and we tried all the resets and no joy.  Finally took it in to store and was told I needed to replace the hard drive.  Why did this occur immediately after the update was installed?

    I had a look at the diagnostic reports in the console. No system crashes were reported. But I have several user account crash reports. The first crash reports after updating are 4 pkd crash reports. After that I have 24 lsd crash reports. I cannot see anything in these crash reports that would hint involvement of Little Snitch or TechToolPro the only other suspect on my computer. It rather appears that there might have been some permission issues or am I wrong?

    No more crash reports were reported after I deleted the problem user account and reinstalled the same problem user account via the Migration Assistant. Again I made a backup of the user account that did not boot and imported that very same problem account with the Migration Assistant. And now the problem is solved with no more crash reports.

    My update never got as far as most people. I have given up.

     

    Yesterday I casually hit the update button for 10.11.6 and ended up loosing my iMac for the day.

    I have a late 2009, 27” i7 16Gb.

    During the update it went through the install process, rebooted and then went to black screen. I could see and move the mouse, and the volume buttons would beep, but thats about it. I waited an hour and then gave up and restarted. The system seemed to install again but got stuck when the bar was about 75% done, Spinning Ball, Command + L did nothing.

     

    Went to recovery mode, downloaded a whole new system (I assume 10.11.6)…. Same … lockup at about 75% complete. I used disk utility many times, I also successfully booted off of one of my external backup disks.

     

    I finally bit the bullet, and used time machine to go back to 10.11.5 .. Took all night.

    Everything is fine now.

     

    I’m skipping this upgrade for now.

    I had the same symptoms.  I worked through the fix mentioned at the following link and that solved both the black screen on update and the login problems:

    what may also work is using the Launch Services Rebuild database function in TinkerTool System 4.

    It is just a guess. I have not tried that.

     

    Use this function to rebuild the Launch Services DB in the problem user account before repeating the OSX update.

    Fix for El Capitan stuck at login requires using the command line to remove the faulty LaunchServices files. People unfamiliar with the command line could instead use "EasyFind" to remove the LaunchServices files. You can get EasyFind from the Apple App Store.

    I have this problem too. All files apparently missing (or VERY slow to be painted onscreen, and unable to fix with re-install or Combo update. However the fact that the Guest account and New Account worked, and that I was able to see the files when logged over the network seems to isolate the issue to the finder, and specifically to Finder preferences within my account. The other possibility is the CloudKit caches which also are known to cause finder display issues. None of these can be addressed until I can find a way to see the files within my Library folder.

    Problem for me is mine is stuck at the "decryption'" screen (progress bar/spinning icon after you enter password).   Neither clearing NVRAM nor booting into safe mode made any difference.     Been two days researching and none of the other resolutions apply to me because I cannot get into even use the commandline.  I can only access Guest Safari mode.

    When looking in my /Users/your-username/Library/LaunchAgents folder I found a couple that are several years old that link to Adobe software. I've always thought that you shouldn't remove LaunchAgents, but if there are legacy items that aren't used (I'm not sure whether they are or not needed) could or should they be removed?

     

    Also, in reference to Arthech's comment, is there anyway to access a user/Library if you can't login as that user? Would the workflow mentioned earlier in this thread of creating a new Admin account work if you can't login as the original user?

    Is your User's Library hidden by default? If yes, you can make it visible via the Terminal. It's most likely possible that you can use the terminal to delete the LaunchAgents folder. Hopefully someone that is fluent in Terminal can post directions.

    I was able to rebuild from a backup to circumvent this update problem. But when I was looking for other options or workarounds before using the backup this mac was barely usable, so accessing terminal within that user was not possible. I was able to login as another user that was not an admin. But I didn't have the privileges to view the contents of the library of the admin folder... this makes sense. So I was wondering if there was a way to access that folder in this case.

     

    As a backup/precaution I have created another Admin account on this computer to prepare for the next apple update

    I suggest that you add a clone backup to your update strategy. If something goes wrong, you simply boot back into your clone and you are right back to where you were before you updated. While booted from a clone you can see the contents of your internal drive's User's Library. I suggest you unhide or you'll have to unhide using the terminal.

     

    To unhide, select your House (User's folder) in the side bar.

    Do a Command J on the folder.

    Check "Show Library Folder"

    Now your Library file will be visible from a Clone, but not from your other admin user.

    If you don't have a clone backup it's time to start. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.

     

    Create a Clone backup:

     

    A clone is an exact bootable copy of your internal drive. Unlike standard copying of all files to another drive, the clone software copies hidden files along with other in-use files that are not available  when you copy over files to another drive. Look in System Preferences > Startup Disk. You'll see your internal drive. If you have a clone backup, you can select the clone and boot from the clone drive.

     

    Time Machine is not bootable. You can boot into the Recovery Drive, but that does not allow you to see your internal drive. You can reinstall OS X.
