That depends on a few variables. First, the speed of your internet connection. Then, whether you are downloading the full installer which is 6+ GB or just an update to a current installation of El Capitan. The full installer can take awhile.

What is "awhile" - I'm just looking for an approximation . . . . also, how can I monitor the status of the download?

Like we both said, it depends on the speed of your ISP. I have 100 bps service and it takes a little under 15 minutes, because I'm also using wi-fi from the router to the Mac which slows things to about 70 mbps.

You can see a download progress bar on the Launchpad icon in your Dock or a download progress bar on the icon of the Install OS X app in Launchpad.

    Dah-veed,

    I have an iMac:

Currently running OS X version 10.6.8

Processor is 3.06GHz Intel Core i3

    Memory: 4Gb 1333MHz DDR3

Hardrive space:  383Gb available (out of 499.7Gb)

Is the machine capable of running El Capitan, or should I just update to

    Yosemite ?

    Thanks

    Walt
