No sound after installing 10.11.6

After installing this latest software update, I now have no sound from internal speakers or from headphones when I pulg them in. Checked the sound settings on my Macbook and they show "External Speakers" on and volume is turned up to maximum. I tried re-starting the computer, but still have no sound. HELP!!

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I found the answer to my lack of sound in iTunes. The answer is separate from the general "sound" settings. When in iTunes, on the menu bar there is an icon in a small white box of a triangle with radiating circles coming out of it. Click on that and make sure the check box is for internal speakers. Then slide the volume up. Mine was set to the lowest, so I couldn't hear it. By moving the slider to the right I was back to normal again.

So I found a solution to my problem (which may or may not be the same as this).

When I went to System Preferences > Sound > Output tab,

the only listed device was "Optical Digital Output Port". It should say "Internal Speakers".

Googling, I found this link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4571999?tstart=0

Apparently the Optical Digital Output Port is selected as the default sound output when

the Mac detects some kinds of cable in the headphone jack. The web page had a simple solution

to this problem. Basically clean out the headphone jack. Possible ways to do this:

compressed air from a can/ toothpick (possibly not recommended) / I just inserted and removed

a pair of earphones several times.

I did this and voilà!
