Login into iCloud ok but not from desktop

I have apparently made the mistake of upgrading to 10.11.3 . It used to be that there was no way to upgrade if the version wasn't right for your system (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) now I can't update from my desktop because it won't accept my login info. I can login to iCloud but not from my desktop. ???
