My phone is stuck in start up. I followed the directions but itunes only give me the option of restore and update as one button. I can't just hit update as the instructions imply. If I hit restore and update will I lose all of my photos, contacts and apps? Is there another way to get my phone unstuck without restoring? Thanks

What do you mean it's stuck in start up?
If you see an iTunes logo and sync cable on the screen, it's in recovery mode. Anything that was on the phone is already gone. You need to restore.
Do you have a backup in iCloud or iTunes made prior to this issue? If so you can restore it and recover the data up to that point.
