Q: There is no Safari update in the MAS!

On Apple's Safari page there's an Upgrade Now button.

But pressing it takes you to a MAS page for El Capitan, not Safari. And Safari 9.1.2 is NOT included in the 10.11.6 update. And it doesn't show up under updates in my App Store. I've already installed 10.11.6. and have Safari 9.1.1.

So WTH are we supposed to get Safari 9.1.2?!

Apple's website says "Safari is included with OS X. To get the most recent version of Safari, install the most recent version of OS X from the Mac App Store." But Safari is not part of the package.

Way to go, Apple!

If those cretins would make Safari available separately like they used to and like they SHOULD, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But Apple knows what's best for us, right?

Safari 9.1.2 appeared as a separate update before El Capitan 10.11.6 was released and was therefore available as an update to users of El Capitan 10.11.5.

Updates to components like Safari are distributed via Apple's software update mechanism and not via the App Store update mechanism. This is because you do not 'buy' Safari.

What sometime ago started and continues to cause a lot of confusion is that these days the same user interface i.e. the App Store icon is used to get both software updates and App Store updates.

I am surprised if as appears the case El Capitan 10.11.6 does not itself include Safari 9.1.2, or that Safari 9.1.2 is not provided as a software update to El Capitan 10.11.6. The way I read the security release notes for Safari 9.1.2 it should still be listed as a software update for 10.11.6 if you had not already installed it.

FWIW, this does not agree with my experience. I have just updated this morning, and was following this thread before.

    I checked before updating:

         in 10.11.5 I had Safari 9.1.1

    I checked after updating:

         in 10.11.6 I now have Safari 9.1.2

so the update of OS X did cause Safari to be updated (as I think was expected).

I did, however, use the COMBO update, instead of using the delta from the App Store.

So, for the OP's benefit: it has probably been said already, but in these circumstances, even after doing the update, it usually helps to download and run the Combo updater (yes, run the 10.11.6 Combo, even when you are already running 10.11.6).

Even if i doesn't fix it (though I expect it will), it certainly can't hurt.
