May I upgrade to El Capitan from Mountain Lion or must I upgrade to Yosemite first?

No need to go through Yosemite, just go straight to El Capitan
Upgrades don't require the use of sequential prior upgrades. You can go from Snow Leopard to El Capitan as long as your Mac meets the technical requirements.
