Q: restart not working to perform update to 10.11.6?

I downloaded the update through the Appstore and when I tell the computer to do a restart it does nothing at all. I tried closing all open apps and giving it another go and still nothing at all. I am now downloading the combo update to see if that works. Anyone else with the same problem updating to 10.11.6 ?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I'm having the same problem. Mine refuses to restart or shut down because the system says Finder is still open, even though it doesn't appear to be. I have run killall on Finder and it says nothing is running. Also tried force quit and relaunch. Nothing works! Have had to turn my macbook off at the power button for the past few days, but it returns in the same state when I turn it back on again.

At least it isn't just me then.

The download of the combo update is just the same. Still won't restart and like you I went for the power button and it came back without anything being updated.

Try installing while booted into the Safe Mode.

Try the suggestion by Eric Root. If that doesn't work, please make an Etrecheck report and post the results in a reply: http://etrecheck.com/

I went for a reset of PRAM or NVRAM in the end and it allowed me to do the update. The not restarting problem still persists and it seems to be something to do with Kiosk mode. Now I have the update done I'll hang on until macOS Sierra arrives and I'll do a clean install of the new operating system.

Em, I've already installed the update (not in Safe mode), so how can I re-install the update in Safe mode? I've re-booted in Safe Mode, but still the problem persists. Are you suggesting the combo in Safe Mode?
