how can I get iChat back on line
it worked all along, and now it says it's Offline. Pulling the menu doesn't give me an Online option.

Hi,
If you only have the iMessages account Active then the Status item in Messages Menu > Status does not apply.
There is no Status for the iMessages account.
The Status item only refers to accounts that have Buddy lists (AIM, Bonjour, Jabber including Google and Yahoo)
Enable the Bonjour account if that is the only one you have.
It can also be set then from the Buddy List and the DOCK icon.
