Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I use an external monitor every day with my MacBook Pro, so I know how useful it can be, and I'll do all I can to help. You were off to a great start with resetting the SMC and NVRAM. From here what I'd recommend is starting up your Mac under a test user to see if the issue is specific to your user account or if it's system-wide.
To do this you can open your System Preferences and select "Users & Groups". Then click the padlock icon at the bottom and enter your password to unlock the options. Click the plus sign (+) to add a new user. Be sure to make that user an administrator. Once the account is set up, log out of your current account and into the new test user. If the monitor is not detected in the test user, I'd recommend reinstalling the update using recovery mode. This will not delete any files from your mac. This article will walk you through that process: How to reinstall OS X
If you run into any trouble or have any questions, the entire community is here to help.

Jul 20, 2016 4:43 PM in response to Ulexes138by cameronreilly,Thanks Ulexes. Great idea to try a test account. Unfortunately the monitor still didn't work. However, after I posted my first message yesterday, the monitor *did* start working again, for no apparent reason, but today it has stopped again. I guess I'll try recovery mode. Thanks.
