BackingUp my iMac in a LaCie HDD

Hello nice people,

I am in need of your help, recently my iMac has been getting slower and slower and i am certain it is because the hdd it's almost at it's capacity, so i want to back everything up and do a fresh install.

i need help with 2 things :

1. how do i backup without compressing files? most of the backups are compressed files that need to be restored so they can be opened, i want them all transferred to my HDD so i have access to them whenever i need them as i don't intend to get them back to the imac itself . My HDD is a LaCie Rugged 2TB with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0

2. Can someone link me how to fully format my iMac and do a Fresh install of OSX ? I don't have a disc, when i bought it, it was running Mavericks i think if i'm not wrong.

iMac info:

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)

3,2 GHz Intel Core i5

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1024 MB

running: OSX El Capitan
version 10.11

Thank you for everything

You need to think this through:

1. A back up is a copy on another disk (at least), so what you describe is moving data from your internal to an external HD, but that's not backing up. Why? If the external does down you lose the data and have no copy.

To move the data simply drag it over to the external - no compression involved. Once that's done you can delete it from the internal.

2. Backing up - and if you do the above you'll need to back up both the internal and the external - will require another disk at least. There are several apps that will back up in plain format: Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, Chronosync for instance.
