Q: System failure, constant shutdown

My issue began about a week ago.

Ran hardware tests to discover a memory problem. Replaced ram modules and redid the test. All came up solid.

THat is, aside from system constantly restarting itself and shutting down randomly. No matter if it's on battery or wall power.

ONce i get get into the system on occasion, I can't do anything before it randomly shuts down again.

I Tried the smc reset, as well as the pvram reset to no avail.

TRied to re install the os and wipe, and the system turns itself off the minute the install begins.

TRied replacing the the hard drive to no avail.

At this juncture, I have an appointment set for Friday with the Genius Bar as I'm at a loss, however, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on the situation.

I Also can not boot into safe mode, system just shuts down. Hardware test is still not reporting any problems.

ON the rare occasion I can get into the system,  try to simply copy files to a hard drive, system shuts off. Same with a network hard drive.

Am I missing something?

The 'genius' will probably test your MBP for this issue: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

If it fails the test, the logic board will be replaced (for free).

    Download and run https://etrecheck.com

Then copy and paste the results in your Reply.

That should reveal what's causing the problems.

Unfortunately, I can not get in long enough to do that. The minute I try to do anything, it shuts down. Safari, chrome, and Firefox don't even react really.

TTheir test indicated that my system was well out of warranty for repairs.

I Hadn't heatd of this issue, though it is quite interesting, and if it's the case, then I certainly hope theyll still honor the free replacement.

I'lL update once I find out what they say. Thanks for the heads up.

HHowever, this is good to know. If I can get this loaded in, I'll post the info I get. I'd love to view a log myself, lol.

After about 15 restart cycles I was able to run this program.

The results don't indicate an issue that would show the problems I'm having as far as I can tell.  What do you think?

You have installed RAM that does not conform to the Apple specifications for your MBP.

Check to see if your MBP had a kernel panic.  If so, log and post it per these instructions:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

    Ciao.

AHT comes back error free, however it seems I have several log files.  One specifically referencing the kernel.

Over spec ram wouldn't surprise me as I went purely on the product page saying it was compatible, though would over spec ram cause all the issues I'm having and be the root cause of my headaches?

My suspicion is that the out of spec RAM that you installed may be the cause of your problems.  You indicated that you will be going to the Apple store genius bar Friday.  They should be able to confirm that or eliminate that possibility and find other reason(s).

My review of the kernel panic report does not indicate that RAM is the cause but I may have missed something.

Apologies for failing to give you a definitive answer.

    Ciao.

Your initial post with the symptoms you described coupled are consistent with what might happen with the installation of the out of spec RAM.  Understand this is an educated guess on my part which the genius bar technician will validate or not.

The situation would be simpler if you had RAM with the exact Apple specs for your MBP because then we could test.  You might be able to exchange your current new RAM for correct modules if the vendor is cooperative.  But first wait for the verdict at the genius bar.

    Ciao.

i bought it from Amazon. Wouldn't be the first time I ordered something and got the wrong thing, lol.

MAny any in the page are saying it worked for their MacBook just like mine, as well as the page itself.

I do know one of the two original 2 gig sticks is bad, which is why I had to replace it.
