Q: moving data from Tiger to Mountain Lion

I am attempting to move data from my old powerbook which has OS 10.4.11 to my MacBook Pro OS 10.8.5.   Can you offer any assistance in how most effectively and easily do this?

PowerBook, iOS 8.4

You're not only taking about a jump in several OSX versions you are also talking about going from PPC architecture to Intel. When I went from Tiger on a PPC to Mavericks on an Intel I took the opportunity to do a spring cleaning and review which applications I had that would still work, etc.  I did a clean installation of Mavericks and then re-installed software (upgrading versions where available) and copied my data files manually.  If you are somewhat knowledgeable about computers you can try copying some folders in your user Library to bring across browser bookmarks and the like.

I would use Migration Assistant , on the new Mac ,use a Ethernet cable to connect them and transfer the data

For Applications,You must look at the Mac App Store, for alternatives because the apps on your previous 10.4.11 Tiger will most likely not work on Intel Processors. You can also search the web for newer versions of the Software. The problem is an Architecture change, your Next Mac will not need new software, since they are all under the x86 architecture and you can transfer them from Mountain Lion to Sierra , or El Capitan

I am vaguely remembering somebody or something recommending not using Migration Assistant to migrate from PPC to a higher intel OS.  Probably it has to do with application plugins and extensions though I can state that 90% of my Tiger Quicksilver G4 PPC software still worked when I jumped to using Mavericks on a 2008 MacBook.  I did do a clean installation of software just to play it safe but most of my software was "universal" and even things such as iTunes 7.5 runs okay under Mavericks.  It's a few classic ones such as Office 2004 that won't.

I am not all that fond of "wizards" - Migration Assistant is a wizard.

I would use "File Sharing" as explained under that heading in OS X: Manually migrating data from another Mac - Apple Support

This should explain How to move data to your new Mac using Mountain Lion and earlier - Apple Support with Migration Assistant
