Jul 20, 2016 6:29 AM in response to Kudoboy17by Michael Black,Do you still have the iPhone 5? If so, put the SIM back in it and follow the instructions here - Deregister iMessage on your iPhone or online - Apple Support
Or, you can try the instructions here to de-register that number with that old device - https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage/
Sign out of iMessage on the current iPhone 6, and then try de-registering the phone number you use at that URL. Then, once its deregistered, go back on the phone itself and try activating (login) iMessage again and see if it links the phone number & iMessage up to the new device.

Jul 20, 2016 5:04 PM in response to Michael Blackby Kudoboy17,So I de-registered the number on the old device. Then I put the SIM back in the iPhone 6 and tried activating iMessage but I get an error. It says "An error occurred during activation. Try again." I kept trying but it still keeps popping up.
