Q: Google Photos App

I am trying to download the Google Photos App from the App Store, but it's been almost an hour and it still hasn't finished downloading. The grayed-out icon still reads "Waiting." I am at home with Wi-Fi. In the App Store, the blue circle is no longer spinning, but it is not complete. What might the problem be and whom should I contact?

Thanks.

    Hello sashaxela,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to have the ability to download all apps from the App Store. Here are a few things you can try to get this working again.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup in iCloud or iTunes. Use this article for help with that: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Then, I want to recommend you try turning the iPhone off, then back on again. Sometimes, that is all that is necessary to get all the connections reset, and everything working properly again. This help article from Apple will assist you to do that: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The next thing you want to check is this help article from Apple: If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open. There are some great things to check and try to get this download to finish.

If you still have issues, try going to Settings > Wi-Fi and disabling Wi-Fi. Then, go back to the App Store, and see if you can select the app again and get it finished downloading. If this works, it means there is some port closed on your home network that will not allow some part of the process involved in downloading from the App Store to finish. Some things that can block this are third party virus protection, firewalls, or proxies that hide your identity from the internet. These do not have to be set up on your home computer or iPhone, as they can be set up directly on your router. Some security apps also do this, but are only called Security or VPN. There are literally hundreds of such apps you could install on your home computer, router, or iPhone that block incoming ports which will not allow this feature to work.

If you still have issues, do this reset: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network. Use the section titled 'Still can't connect?' and follow the steps to Reset Network Settings. This brings network settings back to the factory defaults. Then, you can try finishing the download again.

The last thing you can do to get this app installed is to connect your iPhone to your computer, and use iTunes. You will have to transfer the purchases from the iPhone to iTunes first, but then you will be able to sync that app back to the iPhone using iTunes. You will need these two articles to do this. Start with: Redownload or transfer your iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer and then use: iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad. You may wish to check the section titled "Keep items from being automatically synced" first, so you do not end up removing your current music or apps, and replacing it with what is in iTunes at this time. Then, you can manually add the Google Photos App.

Thanks again for checking out the Apple Support Communities. Have a great rest of your day.

Thanks so much, Tim. I did a software upgrade and then was able to download the app no problem. It's possible that all I needed to do was restart my phone like you suggested. In any case, all is well now. Thank you again.
