Q: runaway podcast downloads

There is an old podcast that no longer exists that my phone tries to positions itself in front of all the current downloads in the queue.  I've tried to cancel, mark as played, delete, and over other way I can find to stop it, but it keeps re-emerging.

    Hello focophot,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. Looks like there is an issue with some podcast being pushed to the front of the download line on your device. If the podcast doesn't exist anymore, I'm happy to offer a few things to check for this.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup in iCloud or iTunes. Use this article for help with that: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Once your data is safe, you can try manually removing this Podcast from iTunes using this help article from Apple: Delete music, movies, apps, and other content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If that does not help, then syncing your device with iTunes should do it. You would want to ensure the data on iTunes is everything you wish to have on your iPhone, but then use this article to sync the data, and it should remove any old and removed info, especially if it is not in iTunes at the moment, and make your iPhone match iTunes. Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB.

This issue may also be caused because something is stuck in your settings. If you have gotten to this step and are still having issues, I recommend doing the Reset All Settings since this is a download, and may be specific to another setting in the device, since it is not occurring in iTunes or other devices you own. Use this help article from Apple: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network. Use the section titled "Still can't connect?" and follow the steps to Reset Network Settings. But, you will choose the top option to Reset All Settings, not the choice to only Reset Network Settings. I must warn you that this will reset all settings including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before, Touch ID and a passcode, any cards setup in Apple Pay, and removes restrictions. This will not delete any personal data such as music or pictures though.

If all else fails, you can format your device, and set it up new using iTunes. This restores a new version of the iOS onto your iPhone, and should remove any issues you are experiencing. This article will help you do this: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. Make sure you have your backup done before doing this, as it will erase everything and make the phone look like it is brand new. When you sign in to iCloud and all your other services, your data will restore to the device. For any data that does not, you will use this article to sync it back from iTunes: Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
