Q: Photo Won't Attach to Text or iMessage

I've noticed in the last week or so that all of my photos that I take with my iPhone camera are no longer staying on my phone and being uploaded to my iCloud however my phone is not keeping the original - when I go to look at a photo it will not load unless I have data turned on or there is a tiny exclamation point on the right hand side of the image. This has only started happening recently, however I have not changed any settings on my iPhone, Macbook, or iPad recently.

Also I can receive MMS messages, but when I go to attach the photo to a message (normal text or iMessage) it allows me to select the photo but does not attach. I have tried both ways of attaching from the message, or going to the photo and selecting share > message without success.

Details:

iOS: 9.3.2

Settings > Photos & Camera

iCloud photo library ON
Optimize iPhone storage ON

Upload to my Photo Stream ON

iCloud Photo Sharing ON

Settings > Messages

MMS Messaging ON

Any information or ideas would greatly be appreciated!!

If you have photos optimised they need to download before you can use them, to do this you need to have mobile data turned on For photos if you aren't connected to wifi.

I had this same problem and I couldn't find any answers. After a trying a lot of things I tried deleting a bunch of text messages. I reduced my test message size from 9.3GB to 8.2GB of storage. This solved my problem and I can now attach iCloud photos to text messages again. What I don't  know is the max amount or ratio of storage when attaching photos stops working. I just deleted a bunch and tried attaching and my problem is fixed. Clearly iOS knows when too much used space triggers it to stop attaching pictures and it's unacceptable that it doesn't provide a helpful message to the user. Good luck, I hope this helps.
