Q: Is my factory unlocked iPhone 6s Locked?

I bought a 64 gb iPhone 6s from walmart and I am now wanting to sell it. It is not a straight talk phone but it has a straight talk sim card. Im wondering since I put the Straight talk sim card into the phone, is the phone now locked with straight talk? or can I sell it as an "Unlocked" phone?

**Edit** Im not sure if this is the right forum. If it isnt I apologize.

How to unlock your iPhone for use with another carrier

You can unlock your iPhone for use with different carriers. Unlocking means that you can use your phone with a different carrier. An unlocked phone is sometimes called a SIM-Free or contract-free phone.

    Unlock your iPhone

First, your carrier will need to process your unlock request. Then you'll back up, erase, and restore your iPhone to unlock it.

    Start the process:

    1. See if your carrier offers unlocking. Only your carrier can unlock your iPhone.
    2. Contact your carrier and request an unlock. You might need to meet requirements to qualify for unlocking. After you submit the request to your carrier, it might take a few days to complete. Contact your carrier for the status of your unlock request.
    3. After your carrier confirms that your iPhone unlock has been processed, go to the next section.

If you have a SIM card from a carrier other than your current carrier, follow these steps:

    1. Remove your SIM card and insert the new SIM card.
    2. Complete the setup process.

If you don't have another SIM card you can use, follow these steps to complete the process:

    1. Back up your iPhone.
    2. When you have a backup, erase your iPhone.
    3. Restore your iPhone from the backup you just made.

    Get help

Follow these steps if you have any issues or if you see this message in iTunes or on your device:"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier store."

    1. Restore your iPhone to factory settings.
    2. Contact your carrier to make sure that the unlock was applied in your carrier's system.
    3. Restore your iPhone from a backup.

Walmart does not sell unlocked iPhones and never has.  They sell contract free iPhones, but that does not mean they are carrier unlocked.  All iPhone's sold by Walmart are carrier locked to StraightTalk - they don't sell iPhones for any other carrier, nor do they sell unlocked phones.

You can contact StraightTalk to see about getting it unlocked though.

Well actually I bought it from walmart, BUT I took it to an apple store for hardware problems and they replaced the entire phone. So is it unlocked?

No. It is not unlocked. It is locked to straight talk. Walmart does not sell unlocked phones at all.

Only the carrier the phone is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Unfortunately, StraightTalk does not offer unlocking. That phone will not work with any carrier other than StraightTalk.

Apple would have replaced it with an identical model and configuration, including any carrier lock that was in place on the device you turned in.  They will not remove a carrier lock except when specifically authorized to do so by the carrier.

Other than selling it to another straight talk user, I cannot think why anyone else would buy that iPhone.  All you can do is be honest and sell it as a carrier locked phone, locked to straight talk and see if anyone wishes to buy it.

Waiting isn't going to change anything. StraightTalk does NOT offer unlocking. They won't unlock it. As for where you can sell it... eBay, craigslist, friends at work or school... It really doesn't matter. Just make sure you are up front about the fact that it's locked to StraightTalk.

OK. I'd try to get that from them in writing. It contradicts what I've been able to find regarding their unlocking policy. That doesn't mean she's wrong or lying, just that if it's not in writing, it doesn't actually mean anything.

You can start here: Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in the United States and Canada - Apple Support

That document lists all supported carriers and what features and services they offer and support. You will note that "Unlocking" is NOT listed as being offered by StraightTalk.

Im reading this from straighttalk.com their "Unlocking policy"

    TracFone Wireless, Inc. Unlocking Policy

Most handsets offered for sale by TracFone are locked to TracFone service, and not technically capable of being unlocked. In 2015 TracFone entered into an agreement with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding handset unlocking. This year TracFone will begin launching handsets which are capable of being unlocked.

If I read this correctly, I purchased my device on December 19, 2015. If im reading this right, It says my device is capable of being unlocked.

No where in here did I read that they said they would unlock it though
