HDMI is the only supported method so there won't be any guarantee with any converter. Even if it did work you would have issues with resolution, aspect ratio, and be unable to view protected content (I.e. iTunes, Netflix). Functionality could cease at any time as well. Best to purchase a new Tv
I actually did this with a converter with an Apple TV 2 and connected a pretty old projection tv. It worked fine but, as vazandrew mentioned, you will have issues with resolution and aspect ratio. The converter I had chopped off a little of the right-hand side of the video being passed, which I read was very common with converting in this fashion. Depends on how big of a snob you are when it comes to video quality.
There will be no guarantee even when using the same converter, a lot of content will be protected and unavailable and it can stop working at any time since it is not a supported setup. In the end it's much easier to get a new TV
