Sorry.. I was going to reply to you with more information but I'm still trying to finish mine so I'm sure what to tell you.

Can't you ask a friend? Or maybe you can do that at an Apple Store (Not sure).

Buy a copy of Snow Leopard on disk and install it (after formatting the Linux disk)

But why will he format the disk if he needs the files.

Since he has no backup to restore from Time Machine -- Not sure if he has a backup (Do you have a backup?).

So Mizantrop, if you need the files and want to back up the disk, then you really need to use Target Disk Mode.

So that you can back up your Mac using the other Mac.

But if erasing all the data on the disk doesn't matter to you, then you can do what Csound1 said.

The disk needs to be formatted for use in a Mac, formatting the disk WILL erase it, but if he does not he can't use it. Figure it out for yourself.

He can back up the disk first via Target Disk Mode.

And then format it.

He has already told you he does NOT have another Mac, don't you bother to read what he says!!!
