Q: ipad mini activation lock

I have 2 ipads that a former employee activated using his personal account. He is no longer employed and cannot be reached. Is it possible to unlock these ipads? They are not reported stolen and we have tried connecting to itunes, erasing and starting as new devices. However, we get the find my iphone activation lock when we try to activate. The employee left on bad terms and we have been unable to contact him for him to remove them from his account.

If they've been set up with Apple Configurator, the activation lock can be bypassed through it. If not, their original owner needs to ask Apple to unlock them and supply proof of purchase.

I don't know if he used apple configurator or not and he has taken the receipts with him (or destroyed them). We are attempting to go back through credit card transactions and locate the original purchase. How can I tell if he did use the configurator?

It's not he that would use it. It's you.

Yesterday is the first time I touched the ipads. He was authorized to go get them and set them up. When he left, he left a large box of equipment in his office which included these ipads. Our IT guy essentially told us he could do nothing with them. I'm trying to find out if there is something we can do. Obviously if we can locate the original bill of sale or some proof of purchase, we will go to Apple. However, given the circumstances, I doubt we will be able to locate anything and I have even more doubt that we will get any cooperation in his behalf.

Since he won't cooperate, only Apple will be able to remove the lock.

And probably charge a great deal for doing so. This is why I was opposed to ipads and wanted Android OS. They sell it as a great theft tool. The truth is, it's not. When my iphone 6 was stolen, I had it on GPS through find my iphone. The police, my phone carrier or Apple provided no assistance at all. The only thing the product can do is verify your phone is stolen. After that, I purchased Samsung and have never looked back. Looks like my company has two shiny paperweights. I'll just replace them with devices that have a different OS. It will probably be less costly than paying apple anyways.
