Q: Run a DMG file from Terminal

I have my mac booted up in recovery mode and instead of installing El Capitan, i'm trying to install Yosemite Combo from a USB stick, I have mounted the Yosemite image from the USB in disk utility, now I just need to run it so it installs, any idea how I can go about this?

Thanks

yes, do it the correct way, not through terminal with a DMG

Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support

Thanks, I have tried this but it says "createinstallmedia" is not a valid command. Neither is sudo. So is there another way around this or a way to reset the commands so they work?

Try using an administrative account because they are both valid attributes or commands, I just did this twice this week, I made a working 10.9 and 10.10 installer on two flash drives using this document.

Read the entire document and pay close attention. If you are copying and pasting without making the necessary edits they don't work, they can't work, you need to specifically follow the directions as they are explained, not just written.

    Sudo

    usage: sudo -h | -K | -k | -L | -V

    usage: sudo -v [-AknS] [-g groupname|#gid] [-p prompt] [-u user name|#uid]

    usage: sudo -l[l] [-AknS] [-g groupname|#gid] [-p prompt] [-U user name] [-u

                user name|#uid] [-g groupname|#gid] [command]

    usage: sudo [-AbEHknPS] [-C fd] [-g groupname|#gid] [-p prompt] [-u user

                name|#uid] [-g groupname|#gid] [VAR=value] [-i|-s] [<command>]

    usage: sudo -e [-AknS] [-C fd] [-g groupname|#gid] [-p prompt] [-u user

                name|#uid] file ...

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.
