What do you want to do with the video? Just play it, or edit it?  If play it, drag it to iTunes. It will, of course, need to be in a format iTunes supports.  That will copy it to the computer and put it in the iTunes Home Movies folder.  If you want to edit it drag the file from the card to a desired location on the computer.

We have recorded some video and it's on a SD card but we don't know what to do after we put the card into the Mac. What are the steps to watch the video? Will it start to play in ITunes or IMovie?

How you play it depends upon the format of the video.  Right click on the video and see if it offers an existing application with which to open the file. Quicktime Player will play most formats. It may be possible to add it to iTunes (you have to try it and see).  Some video may be in an unusual format and require a special player such as VLC.  I really can't tell since you have told us essentially nothing about the video format, from what camera it originated, etc.

iMovie isn't really a video player. You can but it is more an editing tool. It's a bit like using a hammer to drive in a screw.
