Jul 21, 2016 1:47 PM in response to two bottsby K Shaffer,★HelpfulOther than the App Store where it shows OS X Server 5.1.7 (retail)
there does not appear to be a second link. Is there any update in
the App Store's updates (as available to you?)
OS X Server on the Mac App Store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-server/id883878097
OS X Server - Apple Support (downloads link shows ancient version)
http://www.apple.com/support/osxserver/
One of my Macs is running an older stable OS X; it has Server.
When or if I upgrade, I'd leave this system intact and install a
different later OS X on partition or the second internal drive.
While I've been pondering this, I've second browser searches going...
Not sure how you'd get any free update step to the Server you bought.

Jul 21, 2016 5:04 PM in response to two bottsby K Shaffer,It would appear that if you hadn't a suitable OS X Server for use with El Capitan 10.11.6
the need to buy latest version, is the answer... from previous Mac App Store link provided.
"OS X Server on the Mac App Store"
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-server/id883878097
Other security update history with product link (update not upgrade) can be seen here:
• Apple security updates - Apple Support
Any 'update' steps for existing software that could use them, should be available through
one of the means suggested in the article (with exception of none available) here:
• Update the software on your Mac - Apple Support
If you need a most recent OS X Server 5.1.7, that appears to require mac app store purchase.
Unless someone else can show a path to acquire it otherwise, I'm seeing it this way; for now.
It would not be among 'downloads' when or if the Mac App Store is involved with purchase;
otherwise - a mere update should be available - as previously indicated.
You may contact iTunes store or App Store support and ask. {At the moment, I've
no link.} The idea: ask if you need to buy the recent version, or if it's a step update.
Sorry to not be of more help in this matter.
Good luck!

Servers EnterpriseServer.app is software that you initially have to purchase via the Mac App Store. Updates for software purchased via the Mac App Store are also distributed via the Mac App Store. Such updates are not available via any other channel.
Therefore on your server you would launch Mac App Store, make sure you are logged in to your App Store account, and then check for updates.
Note: While 5.1.5 will work in El Capitan 10.11.5 and 10.11.6, version 5.1.7 will only work in 10.11.6. You therefore have to first upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.6.
I have had no problems first upgrading my servers to 10.11.6 and then upgrading Server.app to 5.1.7.

Jul 22, 2016 4:16 AM in response to John Lockwoodby two botts,Hi, I understand everyone is trying to help, but HEY? I have OS X Server, simply, it is an update like every other Mac Update, like El Capitan, like Keynote, Final Cut Pro! Get it, normal free upgrades through App store MONGREL update, what I want and what Apple should be providing is a direct download ie per El Capitan 10.11.6 that you can download and up date all your computers,, are you people not understanding? I want to update my software to all my computers with ONE download only, not multiple downloads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Servers EnterpriseYou can use the Caching server module to save on bandwidth, this will cache the download of Server.app along with other downloads from the Mac App Store.
You can even copy the Server.app from a Mac to another Mac as a way to upgrade other servers.
You can even use something like Munki or JAMF Casper Suite to distribute new versions to other servers.
Most people do not have enough Mac servers to make this worth worrying about.
