Q: Network Homes and Updating the Server
My servers have the users' directory on external Thunderbolt drives, that are shared with the 'use for network home directories' option checked.
When upgrading from OS X 10.11.4 to OS X 10.11.5 and now from 11.5 to 11.6 everything has gone smoothly except clients no longer auto-mount the shares in /Network/servers/... Users get a "You can't login..." dialog, indicating they have authenticated but don't have a home directory.
The cure, which I found by trial and error, seems to be to remove the external disk from the list of shared volumes, switch file sharing off and on again, then add the disk back to the list of shared volumes and reset its options.
I'm mainly posting this so others with this problem can find a possible solution, but I'd be interested to know if this is a common problem and if there is a more elegant solution.
