Q: bluetooth keyboard not discoverable

I have been having trouble getting my mac toquit programs without a hard reboot, then some programs open but only to a gray screen and then will not close.  This led to more reboots. Now my keyboard is being ignored?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

    Hello jhillsaz1,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to keep your Mac running in top shape, and I'll do all I can to help. With the different symptoms you've described there are a few steps we can use to isolate and resolve the issue. Since you've already restarted, our next step would be to reset your SMC (System Management Controller), which helps control the different hardware systems on your Mac, and the NVRAM. These articles will walk you through those processes. Neither one will delete any data from your Mac.

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

If the behavior persists after following those steps, I'd recommend starting up in safe mode. That will tell us if the issue is related to any third party plugins or add ons. You can restart in Safe Mode by following these steps:

    1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.

You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but don’t hold down any keys during startup.

If you have any questions or concerns the entire community is here to help.

    -Best regards-

I am not able to restart computer.  Only way to get it to respond is by holding the button in until shutdown  then restart.

This seems to be the root issue.  Because when it restarts my wireless keyboard responds for awhile, until something else causes the machine to no longer quit programs even force quit.  Do not know what causes this but it consistently will not restart no matter what except the button?

    try this

    1. get a USB keyboard

    2. have your computer on when plugging it in

    3. check your bluetooth menu just in case if it is turned off

    4. with the usb keyboard hold shift alt, and control with the power button at the same time for about 6 seconds then right away take your hands off those kets and press the power button until it turns on
