Q: Total calories burned per day?

Does (or can) the Apple Watch keep a record of total calories burned per day, including not only activity periods but estimated calories during resting periods? Or does it only count them during workouts? I'm currently using my Apple Watch with a Polar H7 Bluetooth heart rate sensor, and would like to get an estimated count of total calories burned each day to compare against my dietary intake. Is there another app I'd need? If so, what would be the simplest for this specific purpose?

    Only counts during workouts.

"and would like to get an estimated count of total calories burned each day to compare against my dietary intake."

No app for Apple Watch that can do that.

Thanks for the information. It seems odd, though, that no one has supplied this functionality, as I have to think it would be of a lot of interest to many users.

    Hi Frank

Yes, the Activity app keeps a record of total calories burned per day, including during activity and resting periods.

To see the total estimated overall calories for a day - including during active and resting periods:

    • On your iPhone, in the Activity app (coloured rings icon), go to: History (tab) > tap on day > scroll down to the Move chart (which shows active calories) > swipe left on the chart to view the total calories for the day.

For example (shown after swiping on the chart that is initially shown under Move for that day):

The Activity app runs continuously in the background, gathering data both during general daily wear and when workouts are being recorded via the Workout app. The total also includes estimations for resting calories during any periods when the watch was not being worn (such as overnight), giving you an estimated total for all calories burned each day.

Thanks! I had to hunt a bit for the Activity app on my iPhone (it was on the second screen of a folder in which I'd placed some Apple apps), but the info was where you described.
